Swansea Family Dental

Is root canal treatment painful?

Not usually, as we use a local anaesthetic for all our treatments. The pain associated with root canal treatment is caused by the infection in the root of the tooth, not by the root canal treatment itself.

Our dentists provide gentle treatment for our patients, no matter the procedure they are performing. We understand that some people have more difficulty feeling completely numb than others. We leave adequate time for patients to feel comfortable so that their treatment is completely comfortable and stress-free.

If you begin to experience the signs and symptoms of a root canal that requires treatment, please contact our Swansea dental clinic to book an emergency dental appointment. We reserve time in our daily schedules to treat dental emergencies quickly – often on the same day.

Common symptoms associated with the need for root canal therapy include:

  • Swelling around the tooth or on the face
  • Painful jaw
  • Discoloured tooth
  • Small pimple-like fissure on the gums
  • Sensitivity to hot food or beverages

At the emergency dental visit, our team will take an x-ray of the area to assist our dentists in an accurate diagnosis. Root canal treatment typically requires more than one appointment to complete the procedure.
